Cockroaches
German Cockroach - The German Cockroach is the most common species in houses, apartments, restaurants, hotels and businesses in the United States. Adults are pale to medium brown with two distinct black stripes on the back of their thorax (right behind the head on its back). Adults are about 1/2 to 5/8 inches long. Adult females can produce 4 to 8 egg capsules in their life and each egg capsule contains 30 to 48 eggs! The German Cockroach has a larger number of eggs compared to other structural infesting spicies, they also have the shortest time period to develop from hatching until sexual maturity, meaning their populations increas at alarming rates once established in your home or business. Many roach species, including German Cockroaches carry many disease-producing organisms that can cause gastroenteritis (food poisoning, dysentery, diarrhea and other illnesses) as well as Salmonella and E. coli. Cockroaches also carry a wide variety of protozoa and other microorganisms on and inside their bodies, which can be involved in the spread of disease to humans Cockroach excrement and cast skins contain a number of allergens to which many people may have an allergic response, such as skin rash, watery eyes and sneezing. For individuals with a chronic lung disease such as asthma, allergic attacks to roach allergens can be very serious and even life threatening.
American Cockroach - The American Cockroach is reddish brown, and the largest of the common species found in our area. They grow up to 1 1/2 inches or more in length. When indoors, nymphs and adults are usually found in dark, moist areas of basements and crawl spaces, as well as in and around bathtubs, clothes hampers, floor drains, pipe chases and sewers.
Oriental Cockroach - The Oriental Cockroach (waterbug) are a very dark brown to black and usually have a somewhat greasy sheen to their body. Females are broader and larger than males. Oriental Cockroaches can grow up to 1 1/4 inches as a female and around 1 inch as a male. These roaches are typically seen in early spring to early summer. They can be found in yards, dumps, crawlspaces, mulched areas, landscape retaining walls, leaf piles and will sometimes make their way inside.
The Solution - Marshall Pest Solutions will identify the species of roach in your home or business and treat accordingly. Our treatments are hand tailored to each individual customer's needs and could be as simple as strategic bait placement, to as in depth as a whole house or business clean out using a multitude of treatment methods. Marshall Pest solutions uses a wide variety of tools and products to eliminate roach populations and offers ongoing inspections and service to keep all varieties of roaches out of your home or business.

mosquitoes
Mosquitoes - The only known natural transmitters of malaria, yellow fever, dengue, filariasis and some types of encephalitis. All of these diseases, with the exception of filariasis, have been common in the United States in the past. Mosquitoes are found from the tropics to the arctic regions and everywhere in-between. Mosquitos will lay their eggs on a water surface or in a place where they will become wet when flooding occurs. Old tires, plant dishes, clogged gutters, bird baths, low spots in yards and any yard debris capable of holding water are examples of where mosquitoes will lay their eggs around a home or business. Shallow ponds, slow moving creeks, stagnant waters and tree stumps are some natural areas mosquitos will lay eggs in nature. Mosquitos will rest in shady areas of yards, under tree leafs, on or in the bark of some trees, in tall grass/weeds and in bushes during the heat of the day and come out for feeding in the dusk, night and early morning hours.
The Solution- Marshall Pest Solutions offers a monthly yard treatment that will keep not only mosquitos, but fleas and ticks at bay. This treatment will focus on the areas mosquitos like to hang out, and the service professional will also look for and report any problem spots that could lead to mosquito reproduction.

Stinging insects
Paper Wasps - Paper Wasps are usually dark red in color and about 1 inch long. These wasps build their nest over doorways, windows, under window awnings, on porches, decks, in attics, on soffits and many other areas around a home or office. The Paper Wasp nest can vary in size from less than a half inch to softball sized and bigger. The sting from a paper wasp is very intense with a sharp sting followed by a burning sensation. Each wasp can sting multiple times without losing its stinger. Some people can go into an allergic shock if the person is allergic or sensitive to the sting.
Bald-Faced Hornet - The Bald-Faced Hornet is fairly large bodied and can grow up to an inch long and has whitish to yellowish markings on its head and between its eyes, giving it its name. The color of its body is mostly black with white markings on its thorax and abdomen. These hornets build nests that can be as big as a football or larger. The hornets will protect their nest, which could consist of dozens and even hundreds of individuals.
The European Hornet - The European Hornet is the largest of the paper wasps, pushing 1.3 inches at its largest and technically the only true hornet in the United States. Its body is brownish and marked with orange stripes. It does not build exposed nests like the Paper Wasp and Bald-Faced Hornet, but nests in natural cavities, such as hollow logs or stumps, or cavities around structures such as behind window shutters and cracks in brick.
Yellowjackets - There are several species of social wasps known as yellowjackets. Most are around 1/2 inches long and yellow with black stripes. Most species build their nests underground. These underground nests are usually abandoned animal burrows that the yellowjackets adopt and expand as the nest grows. Workers will be seen coming and going from the nest entry points. Yellowjackets will also nest in other natural crevices as well as man made crevices such as retaining walls made from brick, stones or railroad ties, cracks in foundation walls, or other wall voids. Yellowjacket activity peaks in the late summer and early fall when foraging works activities are at their highest. Yellowjackets will often scavenge human food, which puts them in contact with the public more often than any other wasp, hornet or bee. Many experts consider yellowjackets to be the most dangerous out of this group in the United States, because of the potential of its venom to induce severe, life threatening allergic reactions in some victims and for its nesting and foraging behaviors.
The Solution - Marshall Pest Solutions offers several stinging insect treatment options (excluding honey bees). Both our residential and commercial service plan offer stinging insect coverage for nests attached to the structure and we also offer treatments for nests not attached to the structure covered in the service agreement!

termites
Termites - Termites are the most important wood-destroying pest. This is because, world wide, termites do more damage to wooden structures than any other wood-destroying pest. Here in Illinois and Missouri, we deal with subterranean termites. These termites spend their lives underground (with the exception of swarming in the early into mid and late summer), foraging for new sources of food for the colony. Termite workers are constantly tunneling through the ground, searching for moist, decaying wood to eat. Termites need moisture to survive. Termites are soft bodied insects (with an exception to swarmers) that can lose water and dry out when exposed to air. Because of this, termites construct mud tubes that pass any exposed areas between the ground and the wooden food source. These mud tubes are an instant indicator of termite activity in a structure. These mud tubs can be seen coming from the ground, up a foundation wall and into a home or business. Termites work fairly fast and can cause thousands of dollars in damage and can cause structures to become very dangerous.
The Solution - Marshall Pest Solutions can inspect and treat for termite activity and also offers ongoing 24/7 preventive maintenance on your home or business for termite activity.

stink bugs
Stink Bugs - The brown marmorated stink bug is about a half inch long, brown and looks like it's shaped like a piece of armor. It is an insect native to China, Japan, Korea and other Asian regions. In September 1998 it was collected in Allentown, Pennsylvania, where it is believed to have been accidentally introduced. The nymphs and adults of the brown marmorated stink bug feed on over 100 species of plants, including many agricultural crops including many garden varieties. They are now established in many parts of North America and are increasing in numbers every year. Stink bugs will infest a home or business in the fall, looking to overwinter in wall voids, fireplaces, attics and other void areas, and come out in the spring. They spray a foul smelling odor when disturbed and will leave a brown secretion on walls.

Bed Bugs
Bed Bugs have a piercing-sucking mouthpart that enables them to pierce the skin and suck blood from their host. Adult bed bugs are 1/5-1/4 inches long and about 1/8 inches wide, about the size of an apple seed. They are typically reddish-brown and can appear more reddish if the abdomen is full of a recent bloodmeal. Bed Bug eggs are elongated, off white, and very small, about 0.004 in. long. Bed Bugs develop through a process called gradual metamorphosis, with usually five nymphal stages. Each Bed Bug nymph needs a bloodmeal before it can molt. Bed Bugs live in hard to reach or see areas on and around the bed, including the mattress, sheets, headboard, bedframe, baseboards, outlets, nightstands, behind wall decorations and even in sofas, chairs and other places the host frequents. Each female will lay dozens of eggs in her lifetime in these hard to reach places, making control of the infestation very difficult.
The Solution - Bed Bug treatments are one of our most extensive treatments. The first step is to identify the pest and make sure it is actually a Bed Bug. If bed bugs are identified we will provide a prep list on how to prep your home for our treatment program.
The Marshall Pest Solutions technician will treat areas like bed frames, headboard, mattress seams, dressers, tables, chairs, couches, behind outlets, and window and floor trim using a time tested multi-step process. The treatment process requires a 6-8 hr vacate time from the home. And after the treatment, we will schedule a 2 week follow-up. Marshall Pest Solutions guarantees our work and will re-treat at no charge if active Bed Bugs are found during the follow-up, or up to 60 days after the date of the initial treatment. With almost a decade of experience and state-of-the-art products/tools, Marshall Pest Solutions is well-equipped and experienced to help you get rid of Bed Bugs for good!

ANTs
Carpenter Ants - Carpenter ants are the largest ant we have here in the United States, they can grow to be 1/4 to 3/4 inches long and are typically black in color. Carpenter ants will nest in several different locations. Outdoors they will nest in telephone poles, stumps, hollow logs, fence posts, tree cavities and other similar large pieces of wood. Moist or partially decayed wood is preferred by most species. Carpenter ants will often move into a building in search of food. Tree limbs touching the roof or electrical wires are an easy access point for the ants to enter the structure. More than not, the primary nest where the queen is located, will be away from the home, while nests located within the home or business will be secondary, or satellite nests. Roofs, fireplaces, windowsills, hollow doors, under insulation, or other naturally hollowed areas are common areas carpenter ants will infest. Carpenter ants excavate nest galleries in wood, which can be similar to termites, except carpenter ant galleries are clean and almost sandpapered in appearance. This is the main reason these ants are considered pests once they enter a home. The damage can be dangerous and expensive to repair if the infestation is not treated right away.
Little Black Ants or House Ants - These little (1/15 in long), jet black ants are native to all states. Nests are normally located outdoors in soil, sidewalk cracks or under stones or other large, heavy items outdoors. These ants will also nest in rotten wood, woodwork and the masonry of buildings. Outdoors, they feed on plant secretions or honeydew of Aphids and scale insects. Once they make it inside, they will feed on sweets, meats, breads, grease, vegetables and fruit. Bringing outdoor plants inside is one of the most common ways to bring an entire colony inside.
The Solution- Marshall Pest Solutions offers several options for home and business general pest control that will cover ants, including baits, sprays, dusts, exclusion and more. Keeping up with ongoing pest maintenance is an important role in the longevity of a sound structure.

spiders
Brown Recluse Spider - The Brown Recluse Spider is one of the most common pest spiders encountered in the midwest. These spiders can inflict a dangerous bite that some people can have a serious reaction to. The initial bite is not usually an intense pain and is generally less painful than a bee sting and sometimes not felt at all. Within 8 to 12 hours, the pain intensifies and over a period of a few days a large ulcerous sore will form. This sore heals very slowly and more times than not, leaves a scar. The Brown Recluse is a soft-bodied spider that is usually found in homes, offices and other outbuildings. The adult body size varies from 1/3 to 1/2 inches with an average leg span that can make them as large as a half dollar. The body is yellow to dark brown and has a very distinctive violin or fiddle shape on top of its cephalothorax (head).
The Black Widow Spider - The Black Widow is more common in warmer parts of the country, but can be found in Illinois and Missouri, especially in the southern portions of both states. The Females are very recognizable by the distinct reddish or yellowish hourglass marking on the underside of her abdomen and otherwise jet black color. The abdomen is about 1/4 in. in diameter, but can grow to a half inch when full of eggs. Males are much smaller and lighter in color with light streaks on their abdomens. The Black Widow bite contains venom that is neurotoxic. The severity of a person's reaction to a bite depends on the area of the body where the bite occurred, the size and weight of the person, the amount of venom injected, the depth of the bite, the seasonal change in the venom's potency and the temperature at the time of the bite. The bite produces a sharp sting similar to a needle from a shot. After a variety of symptoms, convulsions and death may result, especially if the person is sensitive to the venom and no treatment is received. 2500 bites are reported to American poison control centers annually and of those, 4 to 8 people die from the bite of these spiders per year.
The Solution - Marshall Pest Solutions offers a monthly or quarterly service that will eliminate the spider population in your home or office by using a variety of techniques to physically remove, repel and eliminate the spider population. Marshall Pest Solutions also offers Brown Recluse clean-out services to quickly and drastically reduce the amount of spiders in your home or office for severe infestations. On-going preventive maintenance is key in keeping spiders out and your family and staff safe.

bees
Marshall Pest Solutions will not treat honey bee hives with any pesticides at all for any reason. We will gladly recommend several local beekeepers in the area to assist in relocating the hive.
Carpenter Bees - Carpenter Bees have a bare, black abdomen that can appear to have a gloss to it and a yellow thorax. They are also about an inch long. Carpenter bees can cause some serious damage to a wooden structure, making them quite dangerous in large numbers of nesting females. The Carpenter bee will bore a hole into the surface of most any wood it is able to access and make a 90 degree turn and bore from a few inches to several feet, with the grain of the wood. The Carpenter bee then lays its eggs in these galleries as it makes its way out of the nest. Carpenter bees complete one generation per year in most of the United States. Tunnels are prepared and eggs are laid in the spring. Larvae and pupae develop in the closed cells in early summer and adult Carpenter bees emerge in late summer and return to the same tunnels to hibernate for the winter months. Carpenter bees do not sting, though they will buzz your head in a defensive action. These tunnels cause the wood to be very brittle and weak, much like wood eaten by termites. Carpenter bee activity must be treated right away.
Bumble Bees - Bumble Bees are social insects that generally nest underground. They do not bore holes in wood like the Carpenter bee. They resemble the Carpenter bee very much with the exception of being covered in fine hair. They are both about an inch long and black and yellow. These bees are usually not a problem unless they nest too close to a sidewalk or common way. They do sting though, so be careful around them.
The Solution - Marshall Pest Solutions offers Carpenter and Bumble Bee treatment options that will knockout either of these bees nesting in or around your home and repel them from coming back. Ongoing service is key to keeping Carpenter Bees away all year long.

rodents
The House Mouse - The house mouse is small and slender with a body weight from 1/2 oz. to 1oz. as an adult. The ears are large, the tail is as long as the head and body together. The fur is usually dark gray on the back and light gray on the belly, but colors can vary. Mice can be identified from young rats by the size of the head and the hind feet. Mice can reproduce at rapid rates when conditions are right but can be slowed down considerably when conditions are rough and stressful. A female can produce 4 to 7 pups per litter following a gestation of only 19 days. A female can produce up to 8 litters in her lifetime, although if conditions are good, she is capable of producing a litter every 24 to 28 days. Young mice are sexually mature in 5 to 8 weeks. Mice do not need to drink water, they get enough water from their food. Territories can range from 10 to 30 feet from the nest. Mice constantly explore their territory daily and become very familiar with their surroundings. Mice typically feed at night, with the heaviest activity occurring at dusk and shortly again before dawn.
Deer Mice - The deer mouse is one of the most common semi-commercial rodent species in most of the United States. The average body length is about 6in including a 2 1/2in tail. Their bodies are reddish brown to gray with a white underbelly, white feet and a bicolored tail. This mouse is more common in rural areas where they inhabit fields and various types of vegetation found around homes and businesses. These mice are known for carrying Hantavirus and should never be handled by anyone but a professional. Nests are usually located underground, but can also be found in tree stumps and other natural settings.
Norway Rat - The adult Norway rat has a stocky body, weighing from about 12oz. to 16oz. Their fur ranges from reddish to grayish brown with buff-white underparts. Their nose is blunt; the ears are small and close-set. Their tail is scaly, semi-naked and shorter than the head and body combined. Norway rats will breed all year long indoors, although breeding peaks in the spring and fall. A female's gestation is about 22 days and has about 8 to 12 pups per litter. The pups reach sexual maturity in 12 weeks. Norway rats are social and live in colonies. They will borrow in the ground, nest inside buildings as well. Unlike mice, rats must have a water source to survive. Norway rats are mostly nocturnal, with peak activities around dusk and just before dawn.
The Solution - Marshall Pest Solutions offer rodent control programs for residential and commercial customers in both our general pest service options or rodent control only services!
